Senior Boy’s Soccer 2007 - CWOSSA Champions

On Thursday May 24th , the Crusaders won CWOSSA for the 2nd time in three years. In the morning match the Crusaders defeated Wellington Center 2-0. Spencer Ruetz and Cody Anderson tallied for the Heart. In the championship game, the Crusaders beat Saugeen District 1-0. The lone tally went to Ethan Mount. As a result, the team qualified for the All Ontario “AA” championship held in Timmins June 4th to 6th .
In order to reach the quarter finals the Crusaders needed to place 1st or 2nd in their pool. The Crusaders played four games winning two games and tying two others. On the first day, the Crusaders tied St Mary’s of Brockville 0-0. In the afternoon, the team beat Timmins High School 2-0. Rob Eckensweiler and Cody Rice scored for the Heart. The weather conditions were brutal. The rain made the field a quagmire. The cold and blowing winds added to the treacherous conditions.
On the following day, Sacred Heart played number two ranked St Paul’s of Mississauga to a one all draw. Mark McDonald scored on a pretty set up by Rob Eckensweiler. Later in the day, the Crusaders defeated eighth ranked St Christopher’s of Sarnia 2-0. Spencer Ruetz and Rob Eckensweiler scored for the Heart. As a result of the victory, the
Heart ended up first in their pool.
In the quarter finals, Sacred Heart had to play the number one ranked Governor Simcoe of St Catherines. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw with Vince Weber making an outstanding save to keep the match tied. Unfortunately, Governor Simcoe scored with 15 minutes left in the game. The Heart continued to press missing a crucial opportunity to tie.
Governor Simcoe scored again with seconds remaining.
Although deeply disappointed in the final result, the Crusaders could take consolation in the fact that Governor Simcoe eventually won the gold metal.
The team would like to thank the coach Mr. D. Striukas as well as Mr. R. Striukas for his assistance. It was also wonderful to see Mr. & Mrs. McDonald, Mr. & Mr. Rice, Mr. O’Connell and Mr. M. Norris for making such a long trek to support the team. In addition the team would like to acknowledge the financial support of several groups in the community.

CWOSSA Champions...
OFSAA Bound
The senior boy’s soccer team will be travelling to Timmins, Ontario Sunday June 3rd to compete in this year’s AA OFSAA Championship, which will be taking place from
Monday June 4th - Wednesday June 6th.

The boys earned a birth in the Ontario Championship after winning their second CWOSSA title in the last three years. The Crusaders defeated Wellington Heights 2-0 in
the semi-final match, a game that proved to be sweet redemption for the Crusaders, after having suffered an extremely disappointing upset to Wellington heights in last years regional championship. In the final, the Crusaders went on to play and defeat their district rivals, Saugeen, 1- 0 in the finals. A combined defensive team effort proved to be too much for the opposition that day, as neither opponent really managed to muster up any concrete scoring opportunites.
The boys will be travelling over nine hours to compete in this prestigious event (OFSAA) which is guaranteed to be extremely competitive. This year’s OFSAA soccer tournament will consist of twenty teams. A round-robin format, consisting of four pools with five teams, will decide the quarter-final elimination round. Although all of the teams have registerd, the Crusaders have yet to be grouped into a pool and are not currently aware of who their opponnents, for the round-robin games, will be. Only the top two teams in each pool will advance to the playoff round.
In 2005, Sacred Heart was a strong representative for the CWOSSA region havng earned the antique bronze medal for their fourth place finish in the Ontario Championship
held in Thunder Bay. Seven players form that bronze medal team are still currently on the Sacred Heart team.

May, 2005

May 26, 2005, for the first time in Sacred Heart High School's history, the senior boy's soccer team captured the CWOSSA Championship.

On their home turf (the beautifully mowed turf), the boys walked over each opponent they faced.

In the Crusader's first game, Sacred Heart took it right to Wellington Heights. Matt Davidson scored early, on a punishing free kick from just outside the 18 yard box. This was the first goal of two for Davidson on the game. Marco Barmet sealed the deal for the Heart, by scoring a goal to make it 3-0, putting the game out of reach for Wellington Heights, and putting Sacred Heart into the finals.

The boys went on to face their recent rivals, KDSS (who beat Our Lady of Lourdes earlier in the day). The Heart were up to challenge of winning their@ first ever , @ @ . - Championship, creating scoring chance after scoring chance. Eric Benett scored the first goal for Sacred Heart, who eventually went on to win the Championship game 3-0. Marco Barmet and Matt Davidson were the other goal scorers of the game, while Vince "Vinsanity" Weber, came out with his second shut-out of the day.

Mr. D Striukas would like to congratulate each and every player on the team. It took a complete team effort to win this, not only yesterday, but also to make it to the Championship. Everyone should feel equally responsible for the win. Special recognition must be given to the defenders, as their job is often overshadowed by the scorers. Joe Fortney, Conor Gill and Adam McKinley played a fantastic tournament, never letting their opponents have an open shot on goal.

Sacred Heart is off to Thunder Bay to represent their region in the OFSAA Championships June 2-4, 2005.
